Why build AI fluency?

AI is changing how patient advocacy groups (PAGs) connect with, support, and represent the communities they serve. Building AI fluency helps advocates use these tools with confidence, so patients get the benefit without the guesswork.

We've highlighted a few well-recognized, publicly available courses to help you get started. Each one is free to access.

Online training courses:

  • Anthropic Academy: Two free, publicly available, self-paced tracks recommended for PAG teams – free certificate upon completion:
    • AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations: the core 4D framework for effective, ethical AI collaboration (12 lessons, 3–4 hrs)
    • AI Fluency for Nonprofits: the same framework, adapted for mission-driven, resource-limited teams (shorter, scenario-based follow-on modules)\
  • Indiana University's Public GenAI 101 Academy: A free, publicly available, self-paced course across 4 pathways: prompting, problem-solving, communication, and workflow use:
    • No tech background needed – built around every day, practical examples rather than code
    • Requires a quick IU guest account sign-up first
  • OpenAI Academy: free courses ranging from AI basics to applied workflows and agents, plus events and dedicated resources for nonprofits. https://academy.openai.com/
  • University of Cape Town’s AI Initiative: degree programs, short courses, and workshops in AI, alongside research and insights from UCT's AI Initiative. https://ai.uct.ac.za/

Course availability and access may vary by organization or region.
